Subject: Do you use starter fertilizer?

Hello folks,

Lots of data collected by land grant university research programs in the Corn Belt indicates that starter fertilizer often pays in no-till systems.

I am curious, how well does this research fit with the experience of no-till farmers in the Corn Belt?

Soil-Life has commented on and off list numerous times that starter is unnecessary and is basically just a scheme to sell more pricey fertilizer products and to make up for poor soil management.
What do you think?

If you are a no-tiller that uses starter, what is your program (fertilizer materials, nutrient rates, placement)?

Have you done any on-farm experimentation to test your program?

Are there conditions (e.g., wet/cool/low soil test/high residue/compacted...) when you think starter is most likely to pay?

How important is N in starter? how about P? how about K?
