Subject: Re: vertical tillage and equipment

We are using strip till in the fall and making as large of a mound as possible using mole knives and high pressure on the cover disks. We have both flat and rolling ground and erosion has not been a serious problem. The mounds direct the water to the center of the strips where the residue prevents erosion. You may have more rainfall then we have in WCIL since it seems for several years we have not had heavy rains. Our only problem with strip till was during spring of 05 there was a late frost which reduced population of corn. For some reason, possibly because the cold wind was not able to pick up heat from the ground with residue, the strip till suffered more than tilled soil. Our local fertilizer company has been collecting yield data for several years on about 20,000 acres and they said 05 was the only year that strip till was not as good or better than tilled ground.
