Subject: RE: vertical tillage and equipment

Elmo,I`m in the same boat as you and have been looking and asking"experts"for the last year or more.Just to add to your confustion let me add another view.Coulter machines do a excellent job on the surface but beware, they work on the principle of heavy weight forcing the coulters in the ground(ever notice the racks of solid steel weights?)If these machines are used to "air out"soil before planting they leave a very compacted layer at the bottom of the coulters while the surface looks great.I know of a few guys that have had this happen and notice their stand of corn suddenly look bad when it hits this layer after a good start.
As far as reel machines they are OK on the surface but really don`t do much tillage.
A third option I am looking at is the gen till machine(www.genesistillage.com)
Seems to me this machine would do some deeper tillage and then if equiped with the phonix rolling harrow modules would leave a good seed bed.
I have yet to make a choice but just thought I would throw that out their for you to consider.
What do you think?
