Morris, IL | I can understand that in a 100% no-till, planter being basically only ground engaging tool, but i just can't do that. Strip tilling flows better with short cut up residue, planter does better job when it's just moving little residue aside rather then trying to cut stalk pieces, and my DMI, oh man DMI sidedress bar hates long stalks, turns into a dump rake.
For northern Illinois that is about as good as it gets for planting COC. Most are dealing with lot of residue mixed in the profile and compacting the soil running heavy tillage tools over fall worked fields. You get benefits of fall tilled ground but no negatives of spring tillage. We plant soybeans same way just no chopping stalks.
