SW Indiana | Finished planting beans today, stalks causing lots of problems this past week. Anything from throwing chains off to constantly hitting the 1/2 width disconnect lever and shutting half the planter off, finally just hooked a tarp strap to the levers to keep them from moving. Wandering what to work on for next year, make some guards under the seed transmission to keep stalks from pushing into the transmission? Stalk stompers on corn head? Running a 643, maybe just run the head lower?
Usually fall spray stalk ground and no till beans, has worked well for me. Short on help, really don't have time or want to work the bean ground. Usually run the corn head fairly high, run it low and seems to slow the combine down, but maybe that's what I need to do. If I run stalk stompers does that affect ground drying out or warming up in the spring? Don't know of anyone around here running any.
Would love a nice 15" bean planter, but not in the budget right now. | |
