From my perspective as a woman it is not the piece of paper that means anything. It is about standing there and making promises to each other in front of God, family, friends. It is formally committing for LIFE. It is about making the Daily Choice to do everything in your power to be the best partner. True love, unconditional love is a Choice not a feeling. Standing up in front of others helps hold you accoutable to that when you do not "feel" like everything is great.
If you make a commitment to one person and they are the only one who knows it I think it takes it to another level if you commit to doing something in front of others. When you are ready to really commit for a lifetime to someone I think you will be glad to tell others ie walk down the aisle.
This was said much better than my cobbled up comments...woman's touch I guess. Agree 100% with this. Your comment about unconditional love is a choice is spot on also, something I never really understood that way until our marriage counselor was explaining this, love is a choice. Having your spouse tell you that she loves someone else and not you (not my choice) is a huge eye-opener.
As with most of his posts, I also agree to Fry's comments. Finding someone that will work with you through the hard times is the key. Love is easy the first 6-12 months, after that it becomes a choice. Are you going to choose to be by the side of your partner? Arguments and fights are going to happen, being able to pray and work them out is key. One thing I learned that was bad for me, I kept praying for patients. Be careful praying for that, the good Lord will give you all the patients in the world if you ask for it, took me 2 1/2 years to start praying for guidance instead, prayer is a powerful thing.
