hillrunner - 2/6/2011 09:23 I have never heard of a heated floor where you didn't insulate under the floor. Putting insulation under the floor is way more important than around the perimeter. Way more square footage for heat loss under the floor than around the perimeter. I do not know of a real nice way to insulate the perimeter on a pole barn. Putting down a foundation is best for a heated floor but also much more expensive.


If you don't insulate around the perimeter of the building, then you run the risk of melting the snow outside the building.  I've heard of a few that keep the ground warm enough to keep the snow melted off 4' around the outside of the building.  Ours does not do this, and I'd hate to pay for keeping the grass warm.  We put 2" of rigid insulation on the inside of the footing, about 42" deep.
