Your stumps may still be burning.
We burned a bunch of trees and buried them in a ditch that was 30-40 ft.
Several years later a bit of dirt would cave in and we would se smoke coming out of the holes in the ground.
It seems if the wood is covered and can get no air it will look the same 20 years later if it is uncovered.
However, if one uncovers it 20 years later it degrades quickly
