Cottonwood would tend to rot faster, burning it on the outside would make it rot slower, burying it in clay vs sand or topsoil will make it rot slower. I'd guess you'll get settling in one to five years, then randomly pockets will collapse over the next couple centuries. It won't last forever like oak buried in saturated ground would.
