Check this link on shoulder pain and its causes. Sometimes you can fix things by making a few changes in your habits, both physical and eating. How you sit or sleep might be a factor too. I would look for a second opinion before having a surgery. Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) is another cause of sore shoulders usually for older folks.
