Seymour, IL | especially if it improves profits, the environment and life.
Who is against mom and apple pie, and the flag?
The biggest problem with trying to write about, address, discuss the next big thing is the lack of a definition.
Some producers think sustainable means making enough money to be in business the following year.......
Others think sustainable means no commercial inputs......
The third thinks something else.....and the list goes on
affordability and profitability are not the same thing
One looks at how do things work out over the life of the practice (perhpas 20-50 years)
the other looks at how do things work out over the life of the loan or other shorter term measure.
I am not suggesting that we should not try to look at ways to do things better
but too many change promoting cheerleaders do not look at profitability, scalability, or the fact that the rental term on most farmland is 1 year.
"So how do you plan for a 20 year improvement when you only get to rent the farm one year at a time?"
"How much can you afford to subsidize the competition?"
"What happens if research does not support the position you hold?"
when these questions can be addressed, I think you may find it easier to be able to discuss differences in production methodologies.
best wishes in your work
