Contaminated feed ingredients seems to be the most likely avenue of initial contamination. But it spread so fast that the “professionals” couldn’t quite get a handle on it, and the feed thing is only still in reality a theory, although a leading one.
There have been a couple of very interesting experiments recently. One studied the viability of the virus in feed in a simulated cargo shipment and another studied how susceptible pigs were to getting infected from ingesting feed with small amounts of the virus. Recent article here:
