Contaminated feed ingredients seems to be the most likely avenue of initial contamination. But it spread so fast that the “professionals” couldn’t quite get a handle on it, and the feed thing is only still in reality a theory, although a leading one.


There have been a couple of very interesting experiments recently. One studied the viability of the virus in feed in a simulated cargo shipment and another studied how susceptible pigs were to getting infected from ingesting feed with small amounts of the virus. Recent article here:

With the uptick in grain imports from Ukraine to China in recent years, the science may help connect some dots. ASF has been in Eastern Europe for quite some time (over a decade?)
