I always thought a 1/2 Berk, 1/2 Landrace sow would be ideal mated to a Berk boar. Crossbred female would get more heterosis and Landrace would improve temperment, milk output and weaning average.

Tried it, works OK. Tried it with York’s and Chester’s too. I liked the sows but bred back to a Berk boar was like going backwards as far as hybrid vigor goes. Not as hardy, slow growing. Meat quality wasn’t consistent.

Nicest I ever butchered loin size, marbling, color, backfat etc was a few fat pigs from a Berk/York sow bred to a Duroc. Nice, fast growing, hardy pig.
