Currently, the nuclear power industry receives about $1.5 billion per year in direct subsidies and tax breaks yet nuclear is still the most expensive electricity after coal. In addition the US provides some $20 billion in loan guarentees, over a billion per year in decommissioning subsidies, a billion per year toward the next generation development, $2 billion in "standby support", whatever the hell that it is. They even get a billion subsidy for "unranium enrichment". And on, and on, and on.
And that doesn't even count the state subsidies. Here in NY, the nuclear power plants demanded a $7 billion upfront payment or they would shutdown some plants. This $7 billion was advanced by the state but added to rate payers bills over the course of several years.
And don't get me started on coal. Even with the capital costs of plant construction long ago paid for, coal is still more expensive than any other electricity, Why, because they have to dig it out of the ground and transport it hundreds of miles.
The few billion per year with which they subsidize the renewable energy build out is nothing compared to what they've paid out in the previous decades and still continue to pay out to the conventional sources.
