Just because you've got a 500 Hp engine doesn't mean you're using all 500 Hp all the time. I have 2018 Chevy Volt. It has a 149 Hp electric motor (111 Kw) but I rarely use more than 20-30 Kw and when I'm going down hill, it uses negative Kw's. That means it's charging the battery. It's not uncommon to see -10 Kw coming down a hill. You can't do that with an internal combustion engine.
