Subject: RE: Nitrogen application options

Mid-Michigan
I put almost all of my N on Preplant dry. I use our own spreader and get a very good even spread. I use a blend of urea, ESN and ams. I do not sidedress and I don't leave any N sitting on top of the ground. It is not as cheap as NH3 but substantially cheaper than liquid. It is fast and incorporated within hours of application with a field cultivator. I will then put additional 18 gallons of liquid on with the planter with but that is a starter with micros and some N. I usually shoot for around 200-210#. Expect 200+ corn. Sidedressing is probably a little more efficient way to use your N but I just cant stand tramping over beautiful corn plus I seem to be really busy spraying soybeans at the time the corn needs sidedressing. I don't have the horsepower nor the maanpower (it's just me). Good luck. Lots of different ways to skin this cat and one of my biggest expenses. Screwing this up can cost you a lot of corn.
