| ^^FACT^^
Helical "spring" lockwashers are an ornament, at best. They offer only one benefit. AFTER the bolt/nut has loosened, they MAY [or May Not] keep it from falling completely off, for a few minutes. Maybe.
There is zero evidence, lab or real world, showing benefit to retention under load. But it's like a bad habit we cannot quit... or it's a thing to gripe about when we don't know any better... coffee shop yak ensues... that F$$$ing red/green/blue machine no longer has lockwashers... yadda yadda yadda.
OK... one other small benefit - they can spread out bearing load to a larger surface... but a flatwasher already does that for you anyway.
Proper torque/tension, achieved without a sprung washer, is the answer, and the direction most credible manufacturers are [or have been] going. | |
