Lock washers are worse than useless. I believe it was NASA (and others) that have done studies showing fasteners loosen up EASIER with a lock washer vs nothing at all. There are plenty of systems that work well for keeping a fastener tight (lock nuts, Loctite, Nordloc, etc). Lock washers go right in the trash can whenever I come across them.
