scmn | We use a lot of Nordlocks at work.
What I don't like is that most flat washers are USS grade 2 vs most SAE washers that are grade 5 or grade 8. With modern gr 50 or stronger steels, the flat washer is no longer beneficial since they are often softer than the base material (by definition a washer should distribute a load on a material that is softer than the washer). In most applications that I have seen, the only benefit of the washer is to prevent the paint from being scratched by the tool when tightening the bolt/nut; in these situations it is still necessary to use a washer that is the same grade or higher than the attaching hardware. | |
