Crop share went away here in the late 1970s or so. I think at that time social secirity drove folks to cash rent? Along with just 'easier' for the landlord. As well as the paperwork of today, only one has to keep the govt stuff up in a typical cash rent.....

It was just conventional, common, understood that iron and fuel were supplied by the renter, and stuff you bought to apply - fertilizer, herbicide, etc - was split between them.

Never really got thought about, I guess. When herbicides came about, fields got so much cleaner I think the landlords were pretty happy with the better looking land and better yields, it was incentive to throw in the pot on them?

Lot of leases get worded a little different than conventional. You could write it up different, but you probably end up with a smaller pool of renters if you have special terms. That might lead to lower % or lower yields, which effectively lowers the landlords income as well.

Why tho, I don't really know 'xactly.

Paul
