NEMO | Not dumb at all, and you'll get a myriad of answers on here because I'm not sure a lot of beef guys even have it figured out. The way we do it, is to ALWAYS pick a bull out of a maternally based cow that won't give up too much on growth or carcass. Too many guys pick bulls with no regard for the female side. They'll get caught up in picking a bull based off of physical appearance, or just growth or carcass traits or just plain old spur of the moment weak moments. If the feeder cattle are healthy when they hit the feedlot, if properly fed, they will grow and grade with little effect from whether are not there is a maternal cow in their pedigree | |
