With many years of experience being on a school board, this is the most important decision you will make for both the school & community. Not knowing the process you have used other than a search firm- which we have never used or have been impressed with.
We have used a 2 stage interview process.
The first round consists of administrators, teachers, community residents, and board members. It could be considered part of the screening process.
With the final interview consisting only of board members, have a list of questions prepared ahead of time to ask each candidate. Ask their educational philosophy, discipline of students, communication with staff, students, & community, and if they have done their homework about your school district- their vision of where your school should be in 10 years.

Good luck!
