Why are they promoting spraying aphids before thresholds??

You are dead on. I have had more IPM training than I would like to admit most days, and that practice will hurt you more than it will help you. Your two largest problems would be rebound and alternate pest problems like you mentioned. You would either kill all the beneficials and allow the aphids to come back stronger than before or kill all beneficials and get yourself another pest problem, like spider mites.

I'm not going to disagree with some of the other posts that mentioned some states ET's being a little high, I don't think anyone has completely nailed the ET for aphids yet, mostly becuase it's difficult to measure. Does anyone really count the number of aphids per leaf let alone per plant? I think no, they just estimate, which leaves a lot of room for error, so most people spray when they look as bad as they did back in 20XX.
