Variable Rate Fertilizer will pay IF there is variability (talking soils) within your fields, IF you can accurately delineate the variability and IF you can determine the correct fertilizer application for each soil type. If you do not have enough variability within your fields you will have a very difficult time recovering the cost of this technology. If you do have variability with in your field the next step is how do I delineate the variability. There are numerous methods currently being used, typically the more information you use (yield maps, NDVI, soil maps, etc) the better the delineation. I have seen some very inaccurate zones created by all this high tech equipment. One of the best tool to use for delineating the variability within a field is your own personnel knowledge of the field and a good aerial imagery. Soil test results and a yield goal for each soil type will help you determine the fertilizer application rate for each zone. With further study you can start to get a better idea on the amount of organic soil nutrients that the different soil types are supplying to the crop.
