Colby, Kansas | I think more important than the equipment, is to answer the question how are you going to do it? What data do you have to make VRT prescriptions. Do you collect yield data, zone soil sample, grid soil sample, EC,etc. The hardware, controllers ,etc, is really the easy part of implementing VRT.
VRT of nutrients in terms of payback varies tremendously with cropping system, variability in the field, and the ability to determine what the right rate for a given location is. I also think profitability sometimes varies with the honesty level of the person who is telling you about it. VRT of nutrients (the exception being lime if you consider that a nutrient) is not always clearcut economic benefit, and its not a huge return either in comparison to other things that are often overlooked.
Maybe a little more info about your operation, what data you have available, etc. would be helpful. Just trying to provoke some thoughts here.
