I had a 3pt, then an old worn out backhoe, and now a mini excavator. They all work better than a scoop shovel. It is just a matter of how much time you want to take to get the job done. If your only going to put a few hrs a year on it, it probably isn't worth spending the money to get the job done twice as fast (depending on the machine you might not see that much difference or you may see more), but if you start to use it more, you will really like the actual backhoe. Having said that, if you have never had either, you will really like the 3pt backhoe. They are definitely handy and it is nice to not have the extra upkeep on another tractor (especially if it is an older one)
BTW, some have mentioned breaking a tractor in half putting a 3pt backhoe on it. I had mine on a 4430, so it was a bigger tractor with plenty of hydraulics. That might make a difference.
