I just reread your post and saw you were 6500 over on an axle. Not knowing your truck I will assume you were probably over on your bridge or another axle. Here in Iowa you could easily be fined $10,000 if they went all out. I am assuming you were running a semi. You can get 3 bridge fines, an over gross weight and an axle fine for being over on 1 axle. I got caught 5,000 over quite a few years ago and the fine was more than I paid for my truck.
The worst part was I had left my truck for a friend to load that never missed on weight. I figured I was good and went right to the scale. The same night my pickup and 5 others were stolen and the fine was $10 for the guy that did it.
