I would add a piece of PVC pipe cut in half on the outside of the towel idea given above. Cut it long enough to cover the break (6-8 inches) then cut it in half the long way and put one half around the towel on the back side of the leg and tape it on with duct tape. Make sure it is all padded and will not rub also tight enough to handle the weight but make sure you dont cut off the circulation. Bout 14 days cut it off and watch him walk.
P.S. Make sure you keep an eye on it and if it starts lookin dirty or such you may want to open it up and maybe change the towel so the calf doesnt get a sore and infection under the cast.
