JohnW - Electric is a lot safer than having a propane heater in your house. Propane can cause a real nasty explosion and fire if things go wrong.
so you're sticking 240 volts of electricity in a tank of water and calling it safe? Yes gas can explode. Wiring can short. Sunlight can give skin cancer. Every energy source has issues. You just have to use proper precautions.

We've had both in 2 different houses with 2 different electric companies. Propane here's far and away the most economical. I have never ran out of hot water with my gas water heater. In fact, taking a long shower it gets warmer. Mine is a power vent out the side of the house, so no chimney.

The noise someone mentioned is probably from hard water. I'm sure there is a long explanation, but the short one is very hard water makes noise when it is heated rapidly.
