I would never put in a gas vent hot water heater - we had one to heat our floor heating system and it sounded like a jet plane getting ready to take off every time the power vent fan started up. It was so annoying that we put an electric boiler in and disconnected the hot water heater - just sits there now - and I'm pretty cheap so it was really annoying to spend the money. We got a Marathon water heater with off peak 10 years ago - actually had it replaced under warranty about two years ago - on 4th of July - because the tank split after we had work done on the well and air came pounding in - got another one free. We have the biggest one - 105 gallon? - and never run out of hot water - five people in our house and LOTS of laundry all the time.
