I guess you have to ask yourself is it worth it to you to install the necessary wiring for electric if it is not in place already. You already have the gas line in place.

If your water is questionable quality, I think gas will outlast electric hands down with much less maintenance to boot unless you spring for a Marathon. Electric water heaters can be a PIA for maintenance. I've never had the pilot or burner fail on a gas water heater. The heater itsef goes first.

Gallon for gallon, propane easily has the best recovery rate over electric. Propane used to have the operating cost economic advantage as well, but not so sure nowdays.
