sullivan il. | I started from scratch 4years ago with my first 10 bottle calves, will be approaching 1300 head by june on feed bottle 260 every 8 weeks buy every single kernal rent 4 different barns. I think i am better off not raising my own corn buy on dips and forward contract both my inputs and my cattle have a margin that i shoot for when it is there i pull the triger dont look back. play very close to the vest scrutinize every dime i spend drive a 12 year old pickup. I would guess that my actual corn costs and what those who feed their own corn value their corn at are less for instance when every body was feeding $7-8 corn last summer i was contracted at 4.50-5 each one of these holsteins eat 100 bu. I was raised on the farm feeding cattle but live 125 miles away from the home place have had to buy every single piece of equip. a lot of 30 year old stuff but it works. No help what so ever from any family member. | |
