Here is what we decided to do.... buy 25 broilers now, cornish rocks. If things go well, we'll look at purchasing some pullets after we butcher the broilers. Ordered them from Welp Hatchery here in Iowa. After talking to some others in the area with poultry, they seem to get along best with them.
They are ordered and will arrive the week of the 30th. Got the boys working on fixing up the small room in the old chicken house. New door and window, general cleanup of 30 years accumulation of junk, etc.
Thanks for the tip on the Kent Poultry supplement. We use kent feeds here and got some good advice from our feed dealer already. We may mix our own in the future as we usually have cracked corn around for feeding cows. We'll just run a little out of the mixer before we add any supplement. Just have to clean the mixer out before we do it.
Two weeks until chicks.......
