You have a lot of good responses. I run 50 Rhode Island Red layers just for eggs. I buy them from Cackle Hatchery. They start laying around 18 weeks of age. I would not reccoment them for eating, unless you really like to chew. I feed Kent Poulty 27 and cracked corn. They run outside all day & are shut in at night for protection. I keep track of production and get about 75% production all year long, maybe a little less in extremely cold weather--less than 20 degrees. So my fifty lay 36-40 eggs a day. They recieve no supplemental heat in the winter, it gets to zero in the chicken house and they keep right on laying. I do use a light on a timer to make sure they get at least 14 hours of light per day. Good luck & have fun!
