Southern Idaho
we just rented a place with soil conditions like that, i thought we were the only ones with that crap, any ways, ours you can work up and be nice and mellow and as soon as it turns hot, it just bakes up like clay jars or aspalt, harder than the back of gods head and the crop gets maybe 6" tall and dies, our runs in patches, and thank god it is not every where but probaly 15-20% of most of our fields, they stay wet because they wont drain, our winter triticale is tough enough to grow through it and make a head when wheat won't, also safflower will grow to, were hoping the safflower(even though i hate to growit) will push thru those spots and open up the soil to allow better drainage and channels for the grains to grow, we are though using ammonium sulfate to help with our high PH problem, crop advisors think the more sulfur the better,

just glad to see i am not the only one,
