Ed, there are a number of interrelated issues here.  Cotton for example is just a naturally weak seedling. leaving dimples behind the closers that provide diagonal, across-the-seed-slot cracks for the seed to emerge through helps. similar for beans. in some soils (not all) a rain on a too-smooth surface right after planting can leave a crust like asphalt. jim at dawn
