Two Curvetine closing wheels per planter row unit really make a huge difference when planting into killed sod compared to standard rubber vee closing wheels. Corn into alfalfa sod for example can be your best corn - if you can get the slot closed - and in a way where it doesn't open up again and is conducive to seed emergence. Don't get too agressive with the row cleaner up front. I like our 1572 coulter combo with a ripple blade for planting into pasture/sod. The ripple cuts the sod and the Trashwheels can be run up high. Once you start moving a sod blanket, especially an older well established one, it comes up like a rug. Not a good place to plant. If no tilling, just cut the sod to get the vee opener in it more easily and let the Trashwheels scoot any surface roughness of but forget about trying to create a black strip with the planter in no till sod. Strip till is an excellent alternative. Just leave enough time for the strip to gray off before planting. Good luck. Jim at Dawn
