SWMO | All of the above responses have good points. I renovate/convert about 750 acres per year of old pastures and found it works great.
Pasture work better than hayground because chances are fertility has not kept up with hay removal.
Wireworms and grubs are a definite problem. I have used seedtreatment such as Kernal Guard Supreme.
Forget disking.........it aint going to work
RR seed to get grass escapes unless later planting. Early burndown takes in excess of two gts/acre of RU
I have had good luck planting corn two or three weeks before first burndown. Once you burn down, this will be your wettest field.
Water seems to sit in burned down sod.
You will get 60 plus pounds N release from dying sod.
The potential of the ground to raise its best crop can be realized the first year because of no disease pressure (both corn and beans)
In a wet spring, it can turn into your worst field.
Good Luck
