Subject: RE: Closing Wheel/Curvetine/other types question

Driftless SW Wisconsin

cotton is a different breed...planted shallow, needs especially good seed to soil contact and REALLY doesn't like a crust.

If you try Curvetines for cotton you MUST run two per row. Do not run a drag chain for cotton - leaves the surface too smooth. We want the pock marks on either side of the row. Cracks develop between the pock marks and provide a place for the seed to emerge in crusting conditions.

By the way this is the reason for the chevron pattern on the Case type closing system and why it gained popularity in cotton especially.

I forgot to add, cotton seed is EXPENSIVE.

There are several different styles of closing wheels which will help close the slot in Kansas no till conditions for corn, beans etc.  They are not all suited to planting shallow cotton however. jmho.

If you are also planting in worked ground the Curvetine with the OEM Kinze tail piece spring pressure range are a good match. You can use two Curvetines in worked ground, just watch the tail piece spring pressure setting.

We are also coming out with an easy on/off pressplate option(s) for the Curvetine XR which may be helpful in some conditions. This will help in the muddy corn stalk condition pictured in another thread here. They can be added to any Curvetine XR's sold.
