I was just a teenager in the 70’s but I remember my uncle mixing a load in his 3 point sprayer a joking about putting in liquid gold. Later in the 80’s when I started as a field man it was still very expensive. Not until it came off patent did the price really fall. So it is still comparatively cheap even with the current price increase.
