Monsanto patented glyphosate in 1971.
In 2000, the patent expired, and numerous manufacturers entered the market.
As a consequence, the price of glyphosate fell to near the cost of production.
Eventually, Monsanto was able raise their prices due to reduced competition.
I won't speculate on how they accomplished that.
