If Deere are posting record profits and the workforce, probably rightly, want a slice, wouldn't shares in the business be better than just a pay rise? That would be a good incentive to work harder for the company?

Much as I dislike Deere, I look at what happened to manufacturing in the UK during the 1970's and basically, the unions (and bad management) forced them all out of business.
