Negative, the pH scale is logarithmic, like earthquakes maybe? a 5.0 earthquake is 10 stronger than a 4.0 earthquake?
It takes as much lime to raise the ph from 5.9 to 6.0 as it takes to raise it from 6.0 to 7.0. Or as much lime to raise it from 4.9 to 5.0 as to raise it from 5.0 to 6.0, which is roughly ten times as much lime as the first example. Same way on the upper end of the scale, it's easy to accidentally raise an acid soil to 7.5, much harder to get to 8.5.
