Aggieland | You’re incorrect about Caterpillar and excavators or at least some of them. I don’t know model numbers but I’d call them the larger sized ones are made right here in Texas. They built a very large factory in Victoria Tx about 10 years ago and I went past it just last week and they were still loading them on trucks and train cars.
However your sentiment is correct that the unions have killed American manufacturing right along with government regulations. Texas has seen an increase in manufacturing in the last decade due to our relatively lax regulations and general lack of unions.
I’m the owner of a service business and I fully agree that we lost a huge part of our economy by pushing manufacturing offshore. Not everyone needs a college degree and a desk to be successful. I make a lot more money than most of my college classmates but I look like hell when I get home from work because I’ve been sweating in attics all day, I wouldn’t trade it for a desk job ever.
