Subject: RE: Why metric?

If I remember right the inch was originally the length of 3 kernels of plump barley. I guess it could be said that one centimetre is equal to the length of a large sunflower seed but I don’t think that really makes it any less arbitrary.

The units of measure we use today have been altered throughout history and our current inch isn’t what it used to be.

At any rate, both systems work equally well at measuring but the metric system does make the math easier. In fact for high precision work people who use the SI system revert back to the decimal system that also makes the metric system easy to use.
