Near-north Ontario, French River | Its very much connected to the fact that at one point much of our electricity was generated by hydro-electric generators at Niagara falls. The power was distributed provincially by Ontario Hydro, a provincially owned utility. Over the years that name has changed to Hydro One,,,,, so people referred to their power/electricity billing as their Hydro Bill. Somewhere along the line , the term 'hydro" worked its way in our lexicon as a replacement for "electricity/power" .. Now we have hydro poles, hydro lines, hydro corridors etc .
