Nebraska, The land of corn and cattle | PeteMN - 6/13/2019 17:46 Had a JD finger planter(old) and now a White 6100(not as old). I do miss the ease with which I could turn off the row units and take off the seed boxes on the JD. Depth adjustment was also quicker on the JD. One negative on the White 6100 units is the grooved bearing mount for the depth wheels allows the shaft to wallow out the mounting arm and you can't adjust the depth wheel to stay tight against the opener. New depth wheel arms are expensive. That being said the White does a pretty good job without a lot of messing around and if you're buying used based on price then the White is a good planter for the money.
Yes you can on both accounts, you can convert the arms to use the new style bolt on bearing, its the same bearing you use if you have double V press wheels, the bearing is cheaper than the stem bearing and it will work with both the old steel wheels or the newer plastic/steel wheels. Its super easy, just have to slightly enlarge the hole in the arm, to 21/32 and use a 5/8 Helicoil. Works great, Ive had a pair of wheels I did this to last spring and since have put over 1400 acres on without a single problem. Im converting the rest this winter. I prefer the plastic/steel wheels because theyre designed for the bearing but the last 2 seasons have been on steel wheels. I can send you some pictures if you want.
As for adjusting the wheel against the openers, you very much can if you so choose using the RK gauge wheel kits, I have them on both our planters and every planter will have them from here on out. That is the way they should've been done from the factory. I do not run the tire against the openers because I get significantly more tire life if I don't. I run them close but not quite touching at depth. |
