NW Indiana | But for tax purposes essentially you are selling a calendar year correct? In 2012 bins were worthless, the market said deliver now. Ok I sold my calendar year in 2012, why would I roll my sales to the next year at some point when the market has been offering more in the December contract? You will pay all the expenses of carrying your 18 crop to September, meanwhile you could get 4 more cents using new crop to fill that calendar years sales. Granted basis, but by the time you figure the cost of storage and the extra 4 cents of carry did you earn anything on those bins? Everyone has a different strategy but those that think they a making money hand over fist with bins might not be looking at everything from all angles. Although judging from above it does sound like less mature markets like Kansas there is still good opportunity with bins. The cornbelt went through that at the beginning of the ethanol boom, enough bins later and things got back to reality. | |
