NW MN
Working at it right now. 700+ miles from where I grew up, zero inherited land, machinery, contacts. Started last year breaking 70 ac of very rough and nowhere near prime CRP 50 miles from home. Only thing I could find. Pieced together another 50 right before planting and more for next year. Will have 160 acres spread over 20 miles.

Have one newer but high hour 90hp tractor, lots of old junk implements, 35+ year old combine with 5000+ hours. Built my own planter. Hired a lot of work done/ rented newer big equipment- realized later I should have rolled the dice buying an old 4wd with those funds.

I have no idea if this will work out. Overhead costs are way beyond what I was estimating and the time required is off the charts. Very well may be the dumbest thing I have ever done, or may be the most rewarding. We shall see. If I knew 18 months ago what I know now, I'm not sure if I would try. Working 1 full time plus 2 part time jobs plus the farm to keep everything going. If you are thinking of trying, get ready for a struggle.
