NE ND | I have a love/hate with the farm bill. Essentially, direct payments/subsidized crop insurance proceeds/arc-plc/ over the last 30+ years have ended up going to the land owner in the long run. Take it all away? Short term would be INCREDIBLE pain without a farm bill, but long term would put land back in the farmers hands, not land owners 3 generations removed, or an investor from 1500 miles away looking for 3% ROI.
The subject of food/price sustainability is a completely different argument though. We as farmers cannot win that argument. Short crop/food shortage? Everyone hates us because they don't have enough food to buy and prices are through the roof. "Farmers are millionaires". Food surplus? Why couldn't you store some of you crop for 10 years in anticipation of this food shortage? "We can't not sell our crop for 10 years. We have bills to pay". It's a lose/lose.
Cliff notes: Farmers always have, and always will be the camel that gets the short straw, and keeps on trucking. | |
